It is important to keep in mind that no beginner mountaineer would try to climb K2 nor the first year medical student will be asked to perform a major heart surgery. For people looking to start skateboarding it is important to keep it slow and steady. Rather than going for the tricks, you should first master the basics. Part of becoming famous include learning the basics and always keeping that in mind. If you don’t have your basics right, no matter how hard you try, you can never be a champion skateboarder.

In order to become a master, you should try the basics over and over again. Some of these tips might sound elementary but unless you can do them perfectly, it is pointless to move on. In this article we have combined all the basics tips essential for all beginner skaters.

The right stance & balance

To skateboard correctly, you need to have one foot positioned in front, while the other is at the back. The front foot is responsible for providing the balance while the back foot pushes the ground and provides with the power. The combination of both feet will steer the skateboard and makes you perform other tricks. So, it is of utmost importance that you find the right stance and practice it enough.

There is no one right way of standing on the skateboard – you can have you right foot in front and left one at back or vice versa. The arrangement doesn’t matter but whatever you decide you should always practice with the same combination.

If you are confused about your footing, ask someone to gently push you from behind. The foot that you push out first is most likely to be the one that will provide most stability and balance.

Slow & steady wins the race

For all beginners (that is the future skateboarding champs) we recommend starting slowly. Position your skateboard on a smooth and soft surface (think of a grassy field or a carpet indoors) and then simply stand on it by taking the right stance. This will help you get familiarized with your basic stance and provide you with the balance you need out there. Move back and forward a little, jump softly and try balancing yourself on the back wheel only. On a smoother surface, by doing these basic tricks, you will have an idea of how the board moves and will be ready to roll on harder and real surfaces.

Hitting the road

Now that you have the basic feel of the skateboard, it is time for some actual practice. Think of a suitable ground like an empty parking lot, a ground with not many people, or even your backyard. Stand on your board and figure out your stance and balance before you push the ground. Once you’re comfortable with that, gently push the ground with your back foot and try to balance yourself.

It is normal to take some falls but consistency is the key here. If you really love skateboards, you would never stop trying and will learn to balance yourself while moving within a few days.
